At Takoma Park Cooperative Nursery School, a central piece of our focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion mission centers us in seeking equity in urban spaces and place-based learning experiences.
We are a community outdoor school.
What is an outdoor school?
Instead of sitting and playing indoors, children play, explore urban nature, and enjoy story time in the open air. Integrating nature into early childhood education improves learning, reduces stress, and provides other mental health benefits.
We are a place-based school.
At our school, place-based learning connects us with our community, including the physical environment, local landscapes, geography, and our neighbors.
W are a play-based school.
At our school, play supports language acquisition, early literacy, conceptual learning, problem solving, large and small motor skills and creativity.
The streetlights cast long shadows across our “main” street on the evening of the Winter Solstice. It was such a special evening.
